“For the flickering dance of conversation around a candlelit dining table”
A highly important and significant pair of metre tall, solid silver candelabra fit for royalty. Messel was given the motif of ‘Vines’ for the commission by Oro Bianco Milano, and these are the end result.
Grape Vines, symbolising hospitality and generosity grow from a rocky base, with leaves and bunches of fruits gilt with 22 carat gold leaf giving a depth and richness to the gold, similar to that of mercury gilding.

Oliver Messel, the celebrated theatre and film set/costume designer, interior designer, painter, architect and “Bright Young Thing”, was renowned for his sense of romance. Hal closely looked at his great uncles work as inspiration for these candelabra.
Along with Peter Carl Fabergé’s work at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Messel also visited Wartski’s, St James’, London to be able to hold and get a greater sense of Faberge’s work and to be inspired by the sense of humour often found in Faberge, along with the brilliance in craftsmanship.
